Germany is pleading for a solution at the European level to deal with the Mediterranean migration crisis shortly after it announced it would be pulling out of the Operation Sophia, the EU naval mission targeting human trafficking in the Mediterranean, in Berlin on Wednesday.
"I can add that the Federal Government is pleading to the EU that the operation will be able to continue," said deputy government spokesperson Martina Fietz speaking at the weekly Federal press Conference in Berlin.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Christofer Burger confirmed speculations that Germany's decision was related to Italy's reluctance to welcome migrants rescued off its shores saying, "If the states by the Mediterranean Sea, like Italy, are asking for European solidarity when it comes to the distribution of people rescued in the sea and brought to European shores, the Federal government finds this request legitimate and supports it."
