13.03.2016
More than 300 protesters marched through central Barcelona on Saturday, marking the 30th anniversary of the referendum that was made in Spain to approve their entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Protesters demanded Spain’s exit from NATO and called for an end to the 'imperialist wars' being fought in the world.
Protesters marched through the city centre holding a large banner which read 'no imperialists wars, people want peace.' Dozens of protesters present at the rally held Syrian flags as well as Spanish national flags.
A referendum for Spain remaining a member of NATO was held in the country on 12 March, 1986. The proposal was approved by 56.9 percent of voters. However, a large majority voted against membership, particularly in Catalonia.
