Turkey: Zaman employees queue for security checks at newspaper's Istanbul HQ

07.03.2016
Heightened security measures were put in place at the gates of the Zaman Media Group headquarters in Istanbul, Monday, as police officers conducted thorough checks of employees who waited in line to enter the premises. The measures follow the installation of additional fences and barricades in an attempt to prevent further demonstrations by freedom of speech activists.
Demonstrations began in front of Zaman's headquarters on Friday after the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office requested a trustee panel be appointed to head the media group.
Reports indicate that the prosecutor's order also involves forcing the company into administration.
Zaman is openly critical of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as well as being closely linked with writer Fethullah Gulen who currently resides in the US following his self-imposed exile. Gulen was blamed by Erdogan for the results of a 2013 corruption scandal that saw 52 people arrested, the majority of whom had ties to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
Zaman is Turkey's largest newspaper, with as many as 650,000 copies in circulation as of February 29.
