16.11.2016
US President Barack Obama and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras held a press conference in Athens on Tuesday, focusing on the Greek financial crisis and the current political climate ifollowing Brexit and the US elections.
Obama said "time will now tell whether the prescriptions that are being offered, whether Brexit or with respect to the U.S. election, ends up actually satisfying those people who have been fearful or angry or concerned." He also said the President-elect Donald Trump had “tapped into” fear and the anger of voters, at times using rhetoric that was “pretty troubling and not necessarily connected to facts.”
Tsipras said he had got to know Trump’s “aggressive manner” during the election period but was diplomatic saying, “to be honest, I know very little of Donald Trump.” He called for “modern societies to have help and hope and aspirations” as “the only reply against the increasing trend in scepticism.”
Greece was Obama's first stop in his final international tour as US President. He will visit Germany on Wednesday to meet Chancellor Angela Merkel and the heads of the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain. Peru will be his final stop for meetings with Pacific Rim powers at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
