Journalist (German): "The Federal Intelligence Service admitted that it spied on embassies and other agencies belonging to other European and other partner countries well into 2013. Can you rule out that the Federal Intelligence Service is still doing so?" Steffen Seibert, German government spokesperson (German): "Principally, I would like to say that I cannot comment on how much of the claims made by the media actually applies. The federal government does that rather towards the secretly meeting bodies." Steffen Seibert: "The chancellor's dictum applies." Journalist: "Applies now in the present?" Steffen Seibert: "Applies." Journalist: "Or applied throughout the entire -?" Steffen Seibert: "The chancellor's dictum applies. It also naturally applied when she spoke it the first time." Journalist: "Since then, or also before that?" Steffen Seibert: "The chancellor's dictum applies." German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert responded to questions regarding the spying scandal that rocked the German government, during a press conference in Berlin, Friday. "Regarding the stated occurrence in the press, the German Chancellory is in intensive contact with the Federal Intelligence Service (Bundesnachrichtendienst). It was instructed to clarify the matter completely, and this is what we are focussing on now, clarifying this matter," Seibert stated, adding that "I would like to say that I cannot comment on how much of the claims made by the media actually applies. The federal government does that rather towards the secretly meeting bodies." When asked to comment on the fact that the allegations do not align with German Chancellor Angela Merkel's famous slogan 'spying amongst friends is unacceptable,' Seibert replied: "The chancellor's dictum applies." German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government was rocked in the same week by media reports claiming that Germany's national foreign intelligence agency, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), had allegedly spied on the embassies and government offices of allied countries without the express permission of the German government. The German government has launched an investigation into the matter.
