Queen Maxima of the Netherlands raised eyebrows during her royal state visit to Nuremberg, Thursday, by wearing a coat which some German media outlets have said is embroidered with 'swastikas.'
Queen Maxima wore the coat during the second day of the royal visit to the German state of Bavaria. The grey coat was designed by Danish designer Claes Iversen, and has been worn by the Queen before during a visit to Denmark. Iversen has reportedly said the garment was not meant to be associated with the swastika. The design was instead based of the shapes of items associated with buildings and construction such as screws and keys.
The royal visit took place in the German state of Bavaria on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 April. The purpose of the visit was to "strengthen ties" between the Netherlands and Bavaria, the Royal House of the Netherlands wrote in a statement.
German media outlet Focus.de is one of several to have suggested the coat features symbols resembling the "Hakenkreuz" (Swastika).
