The United States has suspended training of Burundi soldiers for African peacekeeping missions due to political violence in the country .
A decision by Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza last month to stand for a third term has triggered violence protests and a failed coup.
The unrest has caused thousands of refugees to flee into neighboring countries.
According to the White House, training of UN peacekeepers through the Africa Contingency Operations Training and Assistance program began in 2005.
The United States has trained more than 248,000 ACOTA peacekeepers from 25 countries in Africa.
