04.10.2016
Alternative for Germany (AfD) Chairperson Frauke Petry spoke to an audience at Bad Cannstatt on the German Day of Unity, Monday 3 October.
She criticised the annual report released by the Federal Government on the Status of German Unity. The 2016 report expressed concern over the prevalence of rightist extremism and xenophobia in the states of Germany that used to constitute the German Democratic Republic.
Quoting the report, Petry noted, "'East Germany will only be a region open to the world when everyone living there feels at home, can participate in community life and has a good prospect for development,' so says the official report." Petry went on to query, "What, then, is a region open to the world? And what isn't? Is Berlin-Neukoelln one? Duisburg-Marxloh? Bonn Bad Godesburg? And not Bautzen?"
Unity day is a national holiday in Germany commemorating the anniversary of German reunification in 1990.
