The foreign ministers of Germany, France and Poland met near Weimar, Sunday, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Weimar Triangle group.
German FM Frank-Walter Steinmeier welcomed his colleagues Jean-Marc Ayrault and Witold Waszczykowski at Ettersburg Castle, where the ministers took a walk around the park before entering the building to have lunch and discuss a wide range of issues including Brexit, the EU’s relationship to Russia, conflicts in Syria and Ukraine as well as the future of the Weimar Triangle.
Steinmeier stated that after Brexit the EU needs to demonstrate to its citizens that it is capable of reaching solutions in fields such as migration, security, growth and employment.
His French counterpart announced that France is working towards a UNSC resolution condemning the use of chemical weapons, in reference to the Syria conflict. “And although this goes out to everybody, this is addressed to Russia in particular. And we take Russia by its word as we held a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister [Sergei] Lavrov a couple of days ago where we jointly stated that there is no other solution to the Syria conflict than a political one, a solution through negotiations,” Ayrault said.
The ‘Weimar Triangle’ is a loose grouping of Poland, Germany and France, intending to promote co-operation between the three countries in areas of crisis. It exists mostly in the form of summits between the leading politicians of the three countries. The last meeting took place in 2011.
