A suspected arson attack against Belgium's National Institute of Criminology in the Brussels suburb of Neder-Over-Heembeek, Monday, was likely to be an attempt to destroy criminal forensic evidence and not connected to terrorism, according to the Brussels prosecutor's office.
According to local reports, a vehicle drove through the security barriers at around 02:00 local time (00:00 GMT) and suspected arsonists set fire to a laboratory used to analyse DNA and forensic samples from crime scenes.
Around 30 firefighters manage to extinguish the blaze, which caused damage to the building and may have destroyed criminal and forensic evidence. No casualties were caused by the fire.
The attack was initially suspected to be a bomb, but authorities have confirmed that there was no bomb and the incident is being treated as an arson attack, with local authorities stating that it is more likely linked to organised crime than terrorism. Five people were arrested by authorities and questioned, but later released without charge.
