Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz announced the resignations of three high-ranking ministers and the speaker of the Parliament, in connection with a wiretapping scandal, in Warsaw, Wednesday. The Privatisation Minister Wlodzimierz Karpinski, the Health Minister Bartosz Arlukowicz, the Sports Minister Andrzej Biernat and the Parliament Speaker Radoslaw Sikorski have all submitted their resignations, just four months before parliamentary elections. Kopacz praised the selflessness of the resigning ministers, stating that they showed ‘responsibility to the country and did not care for their positions.’ Sikorski said that he resigned out of “concern for the Civic Platform”, the incumbent party, which both he and Kopacz are members of. The now former speaker went on saying that ‘the Civic Platform was the only party that can maintain Poland’s current position in the arena of international politics.’ The scandal originated when Sikorski, Karpinski, Arlukowicz and Biernat were secretly taped during private meetings in a Warsaw restaurant during 2013 and 2014. In the meeting’s audiotapes the ministers could be heard ordering expensive wine, making distasteful jokes, and criticising colleagues and foreign leaders. An investigation was subsequently launched. The scandal came to the fore again recently when investigators' confidential files of the bugging were leaked onto social media. Kopacz stated that she wanted to repair the damage caused by the scandal to her Civic Platform party, and refocus the public’s attention on the upcoming election.
