German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier met with the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian, at the Regent Hotel in Berlin on Wednesday. The high-ranking politicians discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute as well as bilateral relations.
Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to implement a ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone during a meeting of their chiefs of General Staff in Moscow on Tuesday. The truce was enacted at 12pm local time on April 5, although sporadic fighting has continued in the area albeit at a lower intensity.
Hostilities in the region had restarted on Friday night, with Armenia and Azerbaijan both blaming each other for the ceasefire violations.
The first open conflict started in 1988, when Nagorno-Karabakh, a predominantly ethnic Armenian mountainous region, broke away from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic.
Nagorno-Karabakh is recognised by the United Nations (UN) as being part of Azerbaijan but has been under the control of Armenian military and separatist forces since 1994.
