Moscow is interested in “establishing coordination” in Syria with the US-led coalition against the so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS, ISIL), Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated during a press conference in Moscow on Monday. However, the foreign minister maintained that any such prospects would be based “on the understanding of the inadmissibility of ‘flirting’ with terrorists.” He also quipped that Moscow had asked “those who believe that they know the situation on the ground better” than Russia “to tell us the areas where the terrorists are [located].” He added that the US-led coalition appeared unready to do so at present. Lavrov stressed that cooperation between Russia and the Western-led coalition would enforce “the development of rules that exclude unintentional incidents.” Russia's chief diplomat delivered the press briefing alongside Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Lamberto Zannier, who had earlier attended a meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation in Moscow, which focussed on the Ukrainian conflict and international "terrorism."
