Around 1,000 activists gathered in Istanbul to mark the second anniversary of the Gezi Park protests, Sunday. Two years after peaceful protests turned violent, protesters attempted to march towards Taksim Square and Gezi Park once again but had their way blocked by police officers. All major roads were closed leading to the area after police evacuated Gezi Park early in the morning. During the demonstration, activists commemorated the victims of the protests including 15-year-old Berkin Elvan, who became the face of the movement after he was killed by a tear-gas canister after spending 269-days in a coma. Beginning as a peaceful movement against urban development in the park, the Gezi Park protests erupted into nationwide unrest against current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government, who was Prime Minister at the time.
