US Secretary of State John Kerry announced in Berlin on Sunday that Washington will accept 85,000 Syrian refugees in 2016, a figure that will increase to "at least" 100,000 the following year. "I’m pleased to announce today that the United States will significantly increase our numbers for refugee resettlement in the course of this next year and the year after," the US' chief diplomat said, adding that if "it’s possible to do more, we’ll do it." Kerry was speaking alongside his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who argued that the Syrian conflict is the primary cause of the refugee crisis rocking Europe. In terms of a solution, Germany's top diplomat called for a unified response to the conflict, urging Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Russia to "put aside narrow national interests" and instead "adopt a common position and a common approach." The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates that 320,000 people have lost their lives during the Syrian conflict. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that 9 million Syrians have been displaced, with three million fleeing the country to neighbouring Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.
