A scale replica of the sunken Argentinian submarine ARA San Juan was unveiled in its homeport of Mar del Plata on Friday, to serve as a memorial to the 44 crew members who were lost on board.
"This allows us to remember them every day and all the times we want to come, the people of Mar del Plata, also tourists and also from all over the world can come here and remember the 44 heroes who gave their lives for the interests of our country," said Claudio Sandoval at the ceremony.
The replica of the ARA San Juan was built and funded by the charity Agrupacion Isabel and is 16 metres (52.5ft) long, five metres (16.4) high and three metres (9.8ft) wide.
The ARA San Juan went missing after its final communication on November 15 2017, in a stretch of the Atlantic Ocean close to Comodoro Rivadavia. The wreckage of the submarine was found on November 16 2018 at a depth of 907m (2,975 feet) below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
