Russian Minister of Energy Alexander Novak participated in the Ministerial Meeting of the Joint Economic Commission for Coordination of Infrastructure Projects following a protocol meeting with Iranian Minister of Communications Mahmoud Vaezi in Tehran, Wednesday. Addressing the commission, Novak noted that Iran is "the most important" partner of Russia in the Middle East and it has a very "strong" economic potential. Interest showed by Russian companies in both Iran and especially Iranian energy sector continues to increase, Novak stated. Moreover, "the representatives from Russian business are actively searching for Iranian partners and constantly holding talks aiming to agree on concrete projects," the energy minister added. According to Vaezi, many Iranian companies "have launched a lot of projects which are currently successfully developing both on the Iranian and Russian territories." He went on to say that Russian and Iranian authorities have frequently confirmed "political will" to develop bilateral relations. "We cannot be satisfied with the current level of trade balance," Vaezi stressed. The Russian energy minister arrived in Iran on a two-day official visit accompanied by a high-ranking delegation including Russian government officials and commissioners as well as businessmen. Novak is also expected to meet with Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zangeneh, Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian as well as number of other ministers and heads of departments.
