Russian ambassador to the United States Sergei Kislyak donated a bronze bust of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Washington D.C., Wednesday. Gagarin was the first human to travel into outer space, completing an orbit around the earth in the Vostok spacecraft on April 12, 1961.
During the ceremony, Kislyak said: "It's a great pleasure to be here for this ceremony that most probably is outstanding not in its own terms but also on the backdrop of the overall relations between our countries. And it gets even more important because it's a reflection of things that our two countries have been able to do together in exploring space, in training joint missions sometimes, in organising programmes, risking their lives together and coming to the rescue of each other."
Kislyak went on to say that "space cooperation is the model which needs to be governing the goal of building relations between our two countries," before adding: "It's so important especially for the young generations of Russians and Americans to remember how much we can do together. And the space cooperation in this effect, is one of the most visible example of successful cooperation."
Kislyak donated the bust as part of an event to improve relations between Russia and the US titled: 'Building Trust: US-Russia Cooperation and the International Space Station.'
