At least 12 people drowned after a refugee boat sank while travelling to the Greek island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea, Saturday. The bodies of the victims were ferried to a port at the Turkish resort town of Ayvacik before being taken away. The boat was carrying more than 48 refugees, mostly of Syrian origin when it sank, according to Canakkale Governor Hamza Erkal. The Turkish coast guard picked up 25 refugees from the vessel, with a further 11 still missing. An estimated 3,000 refugees have died attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea and enter into European borders since the beginning of 2015, according to an International Organization for Migration (IOM). Some 246 of those have been killed in the waters between Greece and Turkey, as stated by the IOM.
