Tensions flared in Thessaloniki, when a number of demonstrators began attacking police vehicles during a protest over pension reforms, Thursday.
Around 5,000 farmers from across Greece gathered outside the annual Agrotica farming exhibition and later tried to enter a conference hall where Agriculture Minister Vangelis Apostolou was due to inaugurate the fair. Protesters blocked several key roads with their tractors and set police vehicles on fire. Several people were reported injured.
Pension reform as part of the country's economic bailout stipulates the cutting of benefits to retirees alongside increased pension contributions and income tax rates for farmers.
