Hundreds of Shia Muslims self-flagellated to commemorate the Shia Muslim festival of Ashura, in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, Wednesday.
Mourners cut themselves with knives and whipped their backs as young children, unable to wield a knife, had their heads cut for them during one of the more bloody Ashura ceremonies of the day taking place around the world.
Ashura, which takes place on the tenth day of Muharram in the the Islamic Hijri calendar, is a day of mourning which commemorates the killing of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, as well as his family and companions at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram, 61 AH (10 October 680 AD).
The more extreme commemorations of Ashura have been widely criticised by many mainstream Shia Muslims groups around the world.
