UN: 'A landmark' - UN envoy Haley lauds resolution to probe IS crimes in Iraq
US Envoy to the UN Nikki Haley has marked a resolution approved by the United Nations Security Council to investigate crimes committed by self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIL/ISIS) in Iraq as a "landmark," speaking at a UN Security Council meeting in New York City on Thursday.
"It may have taken long time to get here, but today's resolution is a landmark - it is a major first step to addressing the death, suffering and injury of the victims of crime committed by ISIS and Iraq," Haley said.
She went on to say, ""The United States was honoured to work alongside our Iraqi and British partners over the course of the past year to make this resolution a reality," adding that the resolution is an "important first step towards demonstrating that justice is never beyond reach, that no victim is voiceless, and that no perpetrator is above the law."
The document was unanimously supported by all 15 member of the UN Security Council, including Russia.
