Over the last four days Russia’s Air Force conducted 157 combat sorties, hitting 579 militant targets in Syria, Defence Ministry spokesperson Major-General Igor Konashenkov said during a press briefing in Moscow, Tuesday. Among the targets hit were opposition positions in Deir-ez-Zor, where militants of the self-proclaimed Islamic State were reported to have executed hundreds of civilians several days ago.
Konashenkov said that “mass desertion and whole units evading further participation in hostilities has been observed.”
He also noted that, based on intelligence from the “patriotic opposition,” an entire “field camp of Islamic State militants near Kissin” was “completely destroyed.”
Russian forces also struck militants' infrastructure, including “a large fuel depot and oil transfer pumping station in the Raqqah Province," said the spokesperson. Furthermore the Major-General noted that a “convoy of fuel tankers, transporting oil towards the border with Turkey, was detected” and subsequently destroyed by a “Sukhoi Su-24.”
Lastly, Konashenkov said that the Russian Air Force was conducting humanitarian missions on top of their military responsibilities, stating that “yesterday the residents of the besieged city of Deir ez-Zor received more than 40 tons of humanitarian aid.”
