Germany: Jubilation as ExoMars' lander Schiaparelli successfully reaches Mars orbit

ExoMars mission control members rejoiced at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt on Wednesday, as the ExoMars lander, Schiaparelli, successfully entered Mars orbit before losing contact with mission control. The ExoMars 2016 mission is a joint project of the European Space Agency and Russian Rocosmos.
European Space Agency (ESA) Director General Jan Worner said entering the orbit was a big success for ESA, as it was a "very big challenge." Worner said this landing would generate and gather much information about Mars, which would be valuable for future missions. Worner stated that despite this being a test instrument and a lot of details about the landing are yet to be processed and known, "it worked." Worner also added that the data would be analysed overnight and published during a press conference the next day.
The ExoMars lander consists of two spacecraft, the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), which will search for evidence of methane and other atmospheric gases on the Red Planet, and the Schiaparelli lander - an entry, descent and landing demonstrator - which will be focused on testing key technologies for future missions to Mars.
