United Launch Alliance (ULA) successfully launched the Morelos-3 communications satellite atop an Atlas 5 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, Friday. The Morelos-3 satellite, also known as MEXSAT-2, is designed to provide secure communications for the Mexican government and will serve both military and civilian purposes. ULA is a partnership between Lockheed Martin Space Systems and Boeing Defence, Space and Security. Friday's launch marks the company's hundredth mission. ULA traditionally supply services to the US government under the Air Force's Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) programme, but have recently sought to expand their launch services for commercial purposes. The company has four commercial launches scheduled for 2016.
