A Russian government Proton rocket with a Breeze M upper stage launched the European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Monday. The rocket is carrying spacecraft which scientists hope will discover whether there is life on Mars.
The ExoMars 2016 mission will study small quantities of gas impurities in the atmosphere and the distribution of water ice in the soil of Mars using Russian scientific equipment designed at the Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The ESA's Schiaparelli lander will also accompany the Trace Gas Orbiter to Mars. The launch had been delayed from January 7. ExoMars is a joint project of the Roscosmos State Corporation and the European Space Agency (ЕSA).
