This drone footage shows the gigantic 'The Motherland Calls' Soviet monument located in Mamayev Kurgan Memorial Complex in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), which was built in 1967 in memory of those killed in the 'Battle of Stalingrad.' The colossal Soviet monument shows a woman with a sword, symbolising the Russian 'Motherland' and calling all the nation's citizens to defend the homeland. It is 87 metres (285 ft) in height and is placed on a concrete base of 16 metres (52 ft) in depth. The height of the female figure itself is 52 metres (170 ft) with a weight of over 8,000 tonnes. The sword of the statue is 33 metres (108 ft) long, weighing 14 tonnes and is constructed with fluorinated steel. The huge Mamayev Kurgan Memorial Complex where the statue is based was constructed from 1959-1967 by sculptor Yevgeni Vuchetich along with structural engineer Nikolai Nikitin. The area of Mamayev Kurgan, which means burial mound, received it's name after the victorious battle of the Ancient Rus against the Golden Horde. In the Battle of Stalingrad, which lasted from August 23, 1942 to February 2, 1943, both sides lost nearly 3 million men. Historians believe that it was the turning point in WWII, resulting in the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany.
