Germany: Former Guantanamo detainees talk of their ordeal

Former Guantanamo detainees Murat Kurnaz and Mourad Benchellali spoke of their experiences at the hands of the Americans at the detention centre during a conference at the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) in Berlin on Monday. The two former inmates discussed both their individual cases as well as other cases from Spain, France and Germany. Lawyers and representatives of Amnesty International, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR ) and Human Rights Watch accompanied the men on stage as they spoke to an audience of around 50 people. Kurnaz from Bremen, Germany and Benchellali from Lyon, France were detained for several years in Guantanamo and were both allegedly tortured on a daily basis. Kurnaz said that he was subjected to "water-boarding" and "getting hung up on chains for several days". The two men continue to fight their own individual cases to seek justice, "I will keep doing that what I'm doing now. I just want to make it public " said Kurnaz.
