A total of 949 defenders of Stalingrad were belatedly buried at the Rossoshki War Memorial cemetery near Volgograd, Monday. Human remains were found by workers in Volgograd's Krasno-Oktyabrskii District last August while laying water pipes. Five of the soldiers were identified and buried in inscribed tombs whilst the others were laid to rest in a 'bed of honour' with all military honours. According to historians, the find is among the most significant in history. Monday's ceremony was planned to coincide with the Day of Memory and Sorrow which commemorates the day the Nazis launched its war on the Soviet Union 74 years ago.
