Unrest in Nantes entered its third day as protesters reportedly tried to set a service station and a local school on fire in the wake of a police shooting of a young man.
Leonardo da Vinci vocational school and a local petrol station were targeted in arson attempts that were extinguished by firefighters; 50 cars however were said to be completely burnt out.
While no clashes or injuries were reported this time around, four people were arrested in relation to the unrest.
Riots have been ongoing in Nantes after a 22-year-old man, identified by local media as Aboubakar Fofana, was shot dead by police during a traffic check.
According to local police, officers opened fire on Fofana after he reversed his car into a police officer. A bullet hit the driver in his carotid artery and subsequently led to his death. However a widely reported witness statement contradicts the police account, saying that the car was stationary at the time of the incident.
A police officer has been taken into custody for questioning in relation to the death of Fofana. Nantes Mayor Johanna Rolland has reportedly asked for a transparent investigation into the case.
