Dust and smoke was kicked up into the air as vehicles were spotted travelling near the city of Morek in Syria on Monday, as seen from Syrian Arab Army (SAA) positions located nearby. The vehicles were seen on the move close to an alleged Turkish military outpost and on the same day that Ankara sent a military convoy into Syria.
SAA troops stationed nearby say Turkish forces are occupying the walled position, which has also seen the reported arrival of armoured vehicles. "Two tanks came from the northeast of the Turkish post on a sandy road, and arrived to the post," said one SAA soldier.
In a statement, the Turkish Defence Ministry said "a deployment of our forces was started on August 19, 2019 at 5.30 am." The ministry says the deployment was made in the wake of alleged threats to "the supply route to the Turkish Observation Point No. 9."
Citing a source in Syria's Foreign Ministry, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) says the Syrian government strongly condemns the Turkish military incursion into the country.
SANA's report alleges that the Turkish military units are travelling en route to the city of Khan Sheikhoun, the scene of recent fighting between the SAA and militants. Damascus reportedly believes the convoy is carrying munitions bound for delivery to Jabhat al-Nusra militants operating in the area.
The Turkish Defence Ministry meanwhile has said its convoy came under air attack while on the move. "During the transit an air strike launched on our convoy at 08.55 am caused 3 civilians to lose their lives and left 12 civilians wounded," the statement reads.
