It really was intended as a joke, I wanted to make fun of conspiracy theories and then it spread enormously so that at some point you had the feeling that it is known in all of Germany. Thereupon the city of Bielefeld reacted this year and set a prize of one million euros for whoever can actually prove this theory, that can show that Bielefeld does not even exist."

Thousands of people tried and failed to get the prize of one million euros ($1.1 million) offered by the German city of Bielefeld to whoever could prove that the East Westphalian city didn't exist. City's Mayor Pit Clausen announced the results of the contest in Bielefeld on Tuesday.
The joke that originated in early 1990-s made the city popular around the world, with many people guessing if it actually existed. The symbolic stone with the dates 1994-2019 was placed, marking the failure of the theory.
"25 years ago, I posted a joke online, that there is a conspiracy theory that wants to tell us that Bielefeld does not even exist. It really was intended as a joke, I wanted to make fun of conspiracy theories and then it spread enormously so that at some point you had the feeling that it is known in all of Germany," recalled Achim Held, the man who brought this idea to life.
Major Clausen said the city was now ready to begin a new chapter called "Bielefeld exists."
