US Secretary of State John Kerry and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini held a joint press conference in Brussels on Monday.
Kerry stressed that the USA supported the Turkish government, "We stand squarely on the side of the elected leadership in Turkey, which President Obama and I both stated in the course of the events, in the early hours as they were unfolding at night." However, Kerry and Mogherini presented a united front in urging the Turkish government to stay calm and respect the rule of law in the wake of the military coup attempt on Friday night.
After making it clear that President Erdogan and the Turkish government had the support of the EU, Mogherini went on to say, "At the same time we call for a full observance of Turkey’s constitutional order and we as European Union stress the importance of the rule of law prevailing in the country. We need to have respect, to have Turkey respect the importance to have the rule of law prevailing in the country. I know we share concerns about what is happening in the country in these hours, we need to have Turkey respect democracy human rights, and fundamental freedoms."
John Kerry added, "We also firmly urge the government of Turkey to maintain calm and stability throughout the country. And we also urge the government of Turkey to uphold the highest standards of respect for the nation’s democratic institutions and the rule of law."
