Israel: DefMin resigns, citing rise of 'extremists' under Netanyahu

Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon resigned from his position during a press conference in Jerusalem, Friday, warning of intensified "extremism, violence and racism" in Israel that he considers to be "threatening the strength of the state and the army."
Finding himself "under serious ethical and professional disputes with the Prime Minister (Benjamin Netanyahu), several ministers and several members of the Knesset", Yaalon stated his resignation had come as "extremists and dangerous people have taken over Israel and Likud".
Despite claiming to work "in harmony" with Netanyahu during the Israel Defence Forces' (IDF) "Operation Protective Edge" during 2014, in which 2,251 Palestinians were killed alongside 66 IDF personnel and 6 civilians, the outgoing minister said that the rift between the two had grown too strong.
Netanyahu has reportedly moved to replace Yaalon with far-right politician and political rival Avigdor Lieberman, who has called for a formalisation of Israeli settlements on Palestinian territory, allegedly in a bid to strengthen his coalition.
