Russia: Putin commemorates 75th anniversary since the start of WWII

President Vladimir Putin laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow on Monday, to commemorate the 74th anniversary since the start of WWII. The ceremony took place at Alexander Garden next to the Kremlin, with soldiers from the honour guard placing wreaths of carnations and roses with ribbons in the colours of the Russian flag as Putin bowed his head during the minutes silence. Among the other dignitaries present were Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev, as well as Federation Council and State Duma Speakers Valentina Matviyenko and Sergei Naryshkin. The Nazis attacked the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, starting a conflagration that went on to claim the lives of more than 26 million Soviets.
