The funeral of the murdered Deputy Interior Minister Rodolfo Illanes, took place in La Paz on Friday. Illanes was kidnapped and beaten to death by protesting miners on Thursday, when he came in contact with a group who had blocked a main road close to Panduro, around 160 km (100 miles) from La Paz.
Illanes had travelled to Panduro in order to negotiate with the protesters, as he sought to end the blockades. His body was found on early Friday morning. According to medial officials Illanes had died due to blows to the head. The incident came at least two miners were killed and 17 police injured during protests that occurred earlier this week.
Speaking after the funeral ceremony, President Evo Morales declared "brother Illanes as a hero and defender of natural resources."
The miners mostly members of cooperatives, were blocking roads across the country in protest over the government's changes to mining labour legislation, namely 'Law 356,' which bans miners from signing contracts with private sector companies.
