Ukraine: 'Financial Maidan' protesters block streets near Verkhovna Rada

'Financial Maidan' protesters blocked Grushevskoho St. near the Verkhovna Rada in Kiev on Thursday, as a financial policy meeting took place inside the building. Activists are continuing their protests against the government's response to the plummeting value of the hryvnia. The local currency has lost around 33 percent against the dollar so far this year, dramatically increasing the cost for consumers of servicing foreign-currency loans. Legislators are considering bill No 1558-1, whereby dollar loans would be converted to hryvnias at the exchange rate on the day the loan agreement was signed. One dollar cost 23 hryvnia on Thursday.
