The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra played at New York's Carnegie Hall, Friday, inaugurating the international celebration of Russia Day in the US. It is the first time the national day has been celebrated in five different countries on the same day. Other famous Russian artistic groups are playing in venues across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas, comprising a total of 550 performers. Led by Deputy Artistic Director Nikolai Alexeev, the orchestra played Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5. Russia Day, celebrated on June 12, has been observed every year since 1992 to mark Russia's adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Federation. Many attend concerts and firework displays in cities across Russia. In Moscow, renowned Russian writers, scientists and humanitarian workers traditionally receive awards and medals from the Russian president.
