The world's first floating nuclear power plant 'Akademik Lomonosov' docked in the city of Pevek in the Russian Far East after the journey of more than 2,500 miles (4023.36 km) along the Northern Sea Route from Murmansk to Chukotka on Saturday.
"People are talking about it a lot and everywhere, especially recently the need is expected to be quite in demand not only in the Arctic zone, but in all the places where it makes no sense to create large powerful energy systems, even so there are people whose vital activity should be at a good level." Vyacheslav Ruksha, Head of the Northern Sea Route Directorate said.
'Akademik Lomonosov' is expected to start supplying Pevek with energy until the end of December after the installation phase is completed.
The Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Region Roman Kopin pointed out that the first kilowatts of electricity is expected to be provided to Pevek in December.
The world's first floating nuclear power plant is equipped with two KLT-40C icebreaker nuclear reactors, generating up to 70MW of electricity and 50 Gcal per hour of thermal energy, which is enough for a city of 100 thousand people. The planned working life span for the vessel is 40 years.
The floating nuclear plant is 144 metres (470 feet) long and 30 metres (100 feet) wide, houses two nuclear reactors and is named after 18th-century Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov.
