17.10.2016
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi officially announced the start of operations to re-take the city of Mosul from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; ISIS/ISIL), during an address in Baghdad early on Monday.
Warplanes of the US-led coalition hit IS positions just east of Mosul later on Monday as Iraqi and Peshmerga forces launched an assault to liberate the city from IS forces. Iraqi forces attacked from the south of Mosul with Peshmerga fighters striking from Khazir, east of the city.
Mosul is the last major city in Iraq under the control of IS, and the army has recently been working towards its recapture by liberating nearby towns and cutting off supply routes to the militants who remain in the city. Mosul has been under the control of IS since June 2014.
