Russian President Vladimir Putin called several government ministers and Igor Komarov, head of The Russian Federal Space Agency, commonly known as Roscosmos, for an urgent meeting on Russia's space programme in Moscow, Monday. The meeting, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitri Rogozin and acting Minister of Finance Anton Anton Siluanov, was dominated by the progress of work on the country's first civilian cosmodrome named Vostochny [East] and the development of the Angara space launch vehicles. Vostochny spaceport is to provide Russia with the capability to independently launch rockets into space. Moscow currently uses the Baikonur launch site in Kazakhstan. Construction began in January 2011 and the site is expected to enter operations in 2020.
