Four staff members of the Cumhuriyet newspaper were released in Istanbul on Friday evening.
Two of the newspaper's columnists, Aydin Engin and Hikmet Cetinkaya were relased along with accountants Gunseli Ozaltay and Bulent Yener.
Nine other Cumhuriyet staff members still remain under arrest. The employees of the newspaper
are accused of having links to Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and of supporting the US based Muslim preacher, Fethullah Gulen, who the Turkish government alleges staged the failed July 15 coup.
Those who reamin under arrest will be sent to Silivri Prison until the trial begins, however a date has not been set yet. Overall 13 journalists working for Turkey’s main opposition paper were arrested on October 31.
On Friday 12 members of the pro-Kurdish opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) were also arrested on suspicion of links to the PKK. The detention of the politicians caused widespread international condemnation. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier ordered Ufuk Gezer, the Turkish charge d'affaire, to come to Germany to discuss the arrests.
