The efforts to rescue a toddler who fell down a well in Totalan, southern Spain, have been significantly slowed down as the excavation team in charge of digging a way down to the two-year-old has hit a layer of stone, on Friday.
Six days into the rescue operation, the team has only been able to reach a depth of 19 metres (62 feet), while Julen Rosello, who fell down a 30 cm by 100 m (11.8 inch by 328 ft) well on January 13, is estimated to be trapped at a depth of around 70 meters (230 feet).
As dirt has dislodged from the sides of the well and blocked it, it has been impossible to confirm exactly where Julen is or if he survived the fall. The rescue team are confident they will eventually reach him but hope he will still be alive by the time they do.
