A Saturn V rocket projected onto the Washington Monument blasted off in the US capital on Friday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.
The launch animation, blending archive footage with artists' renderings, will be played three times every evening until Sunday in Washington DC. The light show was unveiled on Tuesday by the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum with a still image of Saturn V rocket and a launch countdown.
The Apollo 11 mission set off on July 16, 1969 for its four-day journey after which Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to step foot on the Moon.
