Police in Turkey clashed with protesters attempting to reach the Presidential Palace in Ankara, Friday. The protesters were marching to the palace in honour of Aziz Guler after Turkish authorities prevented the return of his body from Syria. Guler was killed whilst fighting against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) forces in Rojava, Syria. The group of protesters gathered at the Middle East Technical University (METU) and attempted to reach the Presidential Palace (Ak Saray) before the police blocked their way. Protesters fired fireworks at the police, who responded with water cannon. Aziz Guler was the Rojava commander of the United Freedom Forces (BOG) that was fighting IS militants alongside Kurdish YPG/YPJ forces in the largely Kurdish regions of northern Syria. He died in Rojava on 21 September 2015.
