USA: Queens residents protest against new Amazon HQ

Residents of Long Island City in New York City's Queens district held a protest against Amazon's plan to build its new headquarters in the area.
The protesters, including some local officials, also criticised the decision of the state's government to give the Seattle-based retailer more than $2.4 billion (€2.1 billion) in incentives and permitting the giant to build a helicopter landing pad at its new facility.
"The governor and the mayor have decided to throw Jeff Bezos almost three billion dollars in subsidies and tax breaks, and throw in a helipad," said councilman Jimmy Van Bramer during the rally.
"Amazon is not a trustworthy actor. They have destroyed communities across the country," stressed Maritza Silva-Farrell, the executive director of The Alliance for a Greater New York. "Any funding that we have at the state level should be invested in our infrastructure, in our communities, rather than given to this billion company," she added.
The protest took place a day after Amazon announced that it had selected New York City and Arlington, Virginia, as the locations for its new headquarters. The company also promised to "invest $5 billion and create more than 50,000 jobs across the two new headquarters locations", according to its statement.
