The 30-year-old Swiss, playing his first match since winning at Roland Garros, won 6-3 6-4 to reach round two of the Aegon Championships.
"I'm happy with the way I'm playing already," Wawrinka told BBC Sport.
Title holder Grigor Dimitrov completed a 4-6 6-3 6-4 win over Sam Querrey in a match held over from Monday.
