Around 440 people who were rescued by the Italian navy from off the Libyan coast on late Monday and are expected to arrive at the Sicilian port of Catania on Tuesday, where members of the International Organisation for Migration are preparing to treat the refugees. The IOM received a call from a boat under distress on Monday. The Italian authorities were alarmed immediately, which made the rescue operation effective. Flavio di Giacomo, spokesperson of IOM, criticised Europe's new 'Triton' programme as insufficient and compared it to border control rather than calling a life saving operation. In di Giacomo's opinion, a new rescue operation without geographic limitation like last year's 'Mare Nostrum' will be needed to handle the incoming boats, more of which are expected to come.
