USA: Protesters rage against jailing of clerk who refused to issue same-sex licences

People gathered outside the Carl D. Perkins Federal Building in Ashland to protest the decision to send Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis to jail on Thursday after she refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses. Protesters held placards reading slogans such as "repent, turn to Jesus or burn," while others held Bibles aloft and preached about sin and repentance. A small group of counter-protesters took to the streets to call for marriage equality and gay rights and could be heard chanted phrases such as "love is not sin." Davis was jailed after she ignored a court order, dictating that despite her beliefs, she must comply and issue same-sex marriage licenses. According to local media reports, the clerk stated in court that her conscience prevented her from issuing any licences. On June 26 the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution would guarantee nationwide same-sex marriage equality. Previously, same-sex couples could marry in the District of Columbia and 36 other states.
