Egypt: Over 100 Coptic Christian families flee North Sinai after deadly Islamic State attacks

27.02.2017
At least 100 Coptic Christian families received aid in Ismailia on Sunday, after they were forced to flee from North Sinai province, Friday, to avert an attack from the Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).
Having travelled for hours, the displaced gathered at Ismailia's Evangelical Church, but were subsequently moved to the city’s Youth Hostel and El-Mostakbal Church. Aid, such as blankets and food, was brought to the hostel, where more than 40 families have been placed, throughout the day. Egypt’s Minister of Health Ahmed Emad El-din also visited the families and medical cards were issued, enabling them to access treatment.
Seven Christians have been killed by members of the Islamic State in the last three weeks, and IS released a video on Sunday, threatening to intensify its campaign against Egypt’s Christians. In December 28 people were killed when a chapel adjoined to Cairo's St Mark's Cathedral was bombed, in an attack claimed by the Islamic State.
